Lately, I’ve spent some time blocking people from my social media for meanness. Listen, I am no saint. Over the years, I’ve shared my share of not so kind comments on social media, but mostly in retaliation or just trying to be humorous by making fun of someone. That doesn’t justify it. But one day, I began to pay more attention to the high amount of evil comments from one person to another… some aimed at me. Most of the time, people are responding to my opinion in a post. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone, but often on social media those disagreements become personal attacks… against people we don’t even know.
When folks are not personally attacking some stranger for their opinion, they’re spending a lot of time making fun of others in unflattering outfits or with hairstyles deemed unsuitable, etc. I have a healthy sense of humor and I know we think making fun of others is all in good fun. But I just wonder how those folks who’s pictures are posted and ridiculed by hundreds or thousands would feel if they knew. I know, if it were me, I would feel hurt and embarrassed. It makes me wonder, why so many take great pleasure in being cruel?
I think instead of putting so much energy to being dark… we should put more effort into being kind. And I’m not just talking about social media. We need to make a conscious effort to be nicer with friends, family, coworkers and strangers. They say “no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. I believe that is even true with someone who is not so nice to you. You never know when those around you are struggling with something and in need a a little warmth from another human being. So, let’s make the choice to be kind as we journey through our lives starting today… even on the days when we are not in the best of moods. It could be life changing for those receiving as well as those giving.
I’m going to begin by randomly sharing kind thoughts on Facebook. If you have any suggestions on ways to be kind to others, please share. Happy Monday!
