Nothing completes an outfit like the perfect manicure, complete with a fresh coat of polish. But do you really know what that pretty nail lacquer is made of? Your favorite polish may contain very harmful toxins that are bad for your health. S&LF talked with the creator of Mischo Beauty, Kitiya King, licensed cosmetologist and maker of a new line of toxin-free nail lacquers that will make you feel good about painting your nails again. So go grab a bottle of nail polish from your cabinet and read on. Is your nail polish “dirty”?
S&LF: Explain what 5 FREE nail formula means.
Mischo Beauty: The term “5 FREE” means that the nail lacquer formulation does not contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, DBP, toluene or camphor.
S&LF: You were inspired to find a nail polish that was safe for you while you were pregnant. Explain how those toxins found in standard polishes are harmful to women who are expecting.
Mischo Beauty: Well, those toxins can cause some ugly side effects such as nausea, light-headedness, headaches, and more. They’ve even been linked to cancer and birth defects.
S&LF: Are they just as harmful to women who are not pregnant?
Mischo Beauty: They’re potentially harmful to everyone!
S&LF: It’s one thing to see a product you are looking for not on the market, but it’s another to actually take the initiative to fill that need. What drove you to actually create Mischo Luxury Nail Lacquers?
Mischo Beauty: I have a degree in Chemistry and I am a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist and makeup artist. So, it’s always been a dream of mine to combine my love of science and passion for beauty. During my pregnancy, I didn’t polish my nails for the first six months because the nail polish on the market either wasn’t 5 FREE or if it was, it left me less than impressed with bland colors that chipped and cracked, and chunky lacquers that didn’t go on smooth. That is when I decided to take matters into my own hands!
S&LF: What inspired the pallets you used for your Icons and Fashion Week Collections?
Mischo Beauty: The brand’s first nail lacquer collection pays homage to Fashion Week and is suitably named “The Fashion Week Collection.” The collection fuses durable, sought-after runway hues with the green-chic qualities absent in the brands crammed together on drug store shelves.
The second collection, “The Icons Collection”, is made up of five bold shades which honor the tenacious and vibrant lifestyles of each style icon for which they were named.
S&LF: With your background in chemistry, what made you decide to take your knowledge and apply it to cosmetology?
Mischo Beauty: It’s always been a dream of mine to combine my love of science and passion for beauty. I felt that learning the basics were important. That is why I decided to go to cosmetology school.
S&LF: Mischo became a nail sponsor at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. What kind of feedback did you get there and what kind of exposure did that give your brand?
Mischo Beauty: The feedback I received was very positive and the exposure was incredible! Media outlets from around the world cover Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week so it was an amazing opportunity to obtain global exposure for the brand.
S&LF: What is currently your favorite color in your collection?
Mischo Beauty: I can’t pick just one. I love them all!
S&LF: What advice do you have for women when it comes to investing in good quality nail polish?
Mischo Beauty: Today’s woman has to be aware of her health and her beauty without sacrificing one for the other, so it is very important for her to be aware of the ingredients in her beauty products and know how they may/may not affect her health.
S&LF: What can we expect from Mischo Luxury Nail Lacquers in the future?
Mischo Beauty: While I can’t reveal too much, I am working on a color cosmetics line to be released in the near future!
