I can’t speak for everyone, but for me… going through a break up is near the top of my list things that I want to avoid at all cost.   One minute you find yourself with someone who you can’t live without and the next minute you are forced to actually live without that person.  When I really care about a man, the break up can leave me borderline comatose and barely capable of carrying out basic necessities like eating, sleeping and watching Scandal.   What does help me find my way back to normal is the right music.  Music helps us regulate our moods. When we are sad we can play some blues, when we are in love, we can play Luther Vandross. We tend to play music that matches our moods or music that might help us get to the emotional place we wish to be.

If you are going through a break up, or are anticipating one in the near future… I have created the ultimate playlist to help you navigate through your break-up funk! This playlist will empower you to get your groove back and reassure you that you are a strong, independent, Single woman who can conquer anything.

1. Grown Ass Woman – Kelly Rowland

Kelly talks about how she is grown and does not have time for the high school games men play. We are too grown and have too much going for ourselves to let men throw us off!

2. I Didn’t Know My Own Strength – Whitney Houston

The late Whitney Houston’s song gives inspiration in her lyrics. “I was not built to break,” she sings.  This song exemplifies the strength of a woman even in her weakest hour like when she goes through a breakup especially.

3. Hate on Me – Jill Scott

This is one of the most empowering songs from Jill Scott that basically states that she knows she is the best she can be and there will be “haters” who will hate on her.   Oh well. Scott is saying that you should not be ashamed to show your greatness.

4. Ex-Factor – Lauryn Hill

This is a song about acknowledging that something in your life is not working anymore, like a “deadbeat boyfriend”. Lauryn Hill allows herself to be transparent in saying that everyone makes mistakes but it is about what your next move is when you come to the realization of your mistake.

Destiny’s Child song speaks for itself. The lyric, “Now that you’re out of my life I’m so much better” is enough to get anyone at any age get through the detachment of a significant other. This is the ultimate “I’m over him” song.

6. You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette

If you want to slow it down with a nice soothing motivational song, Alicia is your girl for the job. In this song she sings about a woman being independent and uplifted. Women are superwomen because we can get through any and everything.

8. Losing You – Solange

This song is about a man leaving his girl because she is too independent. This break-up is for the better because she needs her space to spread her wings to fly in life. Whoever you end up with should never hinder you from that. While you thought you may have been in a solid relationship, you are doing yourself a favor by not being with this type of man.
